Voltammetry of enzyme electrode

Voltammetric method of measurement of the enzyme electrode activity is used for studying features of the molecular structure and redox states of individual parts and the whole enzyme.

The method is based on bioelectrocatalysis – acceleration of electrode reaction in the presence of the enzyme. Enzyme electrode (EE) is an electrochemical device which catalyzes oxidation of the substrates giving electrons or vice versa. EE has the enzyme immobilized directly on a conductive matrix. Biocatalytic current is generated by electrochemical conversion of the enzymatic reaction substrates or direct oxidation of the active site of the enzyme. The main potential applications of enzyme electrodes and systems based on them are biosensors, power supplies for artificial internal organs, portable power supplies, wastewater remediation systems, enzymatic synthesis.

During the master class,  an enzyme electrode based on biological platinum analogue,  hydrogenase from Thiocapsa roseopersicina BBS, will be manufactured. Half fuel cell (HFC) will be assembled using EE, basic electrochemical characteristics of EE, and  effect of hydrogen diffusion on the electricity production of HFC will be studied.
